Victorious Headington are Champions for the Seventh Consecutive Year!

Headington Girls School showed once again why their formidable reputation is well deserved by retaining the Championship for a seventh time. They were competing alongside over a thousand crews at the National Schools Regatta, which has been held at the Nottingham National Water Sports Centre since 1973. The squads from J14 through J18 won in each of the three days of the Championship to win two gold, one silver and five bronze medals. There was also individual recognition for stroke Matilda Martin who received the Ayling Challenge Cup from Maddy Badcott the Oxford Blue.

Remarkably the girls managed to take two title medals in the final of the girls championship eights. The time trials and semi finals took second crew times as well as the first, and both Headington teams qualified. The first eight won the race outright; the second eight rowed a great race and were placed sixth overall, winning them the reserve team gold medal.

Headington’s silver medal was won by the J16 coxless quads. The J15 squad did themselves proud; bringing home four bronze medals in the first and second coxed quads, the girls' eight and the coxed four. Not to be outdone, the J14 crew completed Headington’s medal tally with a bronze in the octuple.

Headington are one of the most successful rowing schools in the country. A number of girls have been selected to represent Great Britain at both European and World levels. The strength of their performance at this regatta shows there is no reason to think that will change any time soon.
